چکیده

We present the results of a systematic search for old isolated neutron stars (ONSs) in the direction of two giant molecular clouds in Cygnus (Rift and OB7). From theoretical calculations, we expect the detection of a large number of ONSs with the PSPC on board ROSAT. By analyzing the PSPC pointings in the direction of the clouds, we find four sources characterized by count rates (∼ 10 c s) and spectral properties consistent with the hypothesis that the X–ray radiation is produced by ONSs and also characterized by the absence of any measurable optical counterpart within their error circle in the digitized red plates of the Palomar All Sky Survey. The importance of follow–up deep observations in the direction of these ONS candidates is discussed. The observational and theoretical approach presented here could be fruitfully applied also to the systematic search for ONSs in other regions of the Galaxy.

Star Formation and Young Clusters in Cygnus

The Great Cygnus Rift harbors numerous very active regions of current or recent star formation. In this part of the sky we look down a spiral arm, so regions from only a few hundred pc to several kpc are superposed. The North America and Pelican nebulae, parts of a single giant HII region, are the best known of the Cygnus regions of star formation and are located at a distance of only about 600...

Kinematic signatures of violent formation of galactic OB associations from Hipparcos measurements

Proper motions measured by Hipparcos confirm the large anomalous velocities of the OB associations located around the Cygnus Superbubble (Cygnus OB1, OB3, OB7, and OB9), and reveal a clearly organized expanding pattern in Canis MajorOB1.At the distances of these associations, the organized velocity patterns imply LSR velocities of up to ∼ 60 km s−1 for the associations in Cygnus, and about ∼ 15...

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

Detection of in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium: the Galactic Center

Absorption lines of have been detected in the spectra of two infrared sources in the Galactic 3 center and also toward the heavily reddened star Cygnus OB2 No. 12, whose line of sight is believed to include only di†use interstellar gas. The absorptions toward the Galactic center sources (IRS 3 and GCS 3-2) probably are due to both in di†use gas and in molecular clouds. The ratios of line equiva...

Modeling the Hard X-ray Lag and Energy Spectrum of Cyg X-1

In an effort to model the observed energy spectrum of Cygnus X-1 as well as its hard X-ray lag by Comptonization in inhomogeneous clouds of hot electrons with spherical geometry and various radial density profiles we discovered that: 1) Plasma clouds with different density profiles will lead to different Comptonization energy spectra even though they have the same optical depth and temperature....
